Liner paper is one of the most valuable tools available to professional wallpaper installers. While it is hidden behind the finished wallcovering, it can dramatically improve the durability, appearance, and long-term performance of a wallpaper installation. Many high-end wallpaper projects throughout Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley benefit from using quality liner paper, especially when walls have existing texture, minor imperfections, or surfaces that require additional stabilization before wallpaper installation.
One of the primary purposes of liner paper is to protect the wall surface from the tension created as wallpaper dries. As wallpaper loses moisture, it shrinks slightly and pulls at the seams. Without a proper liner, this stress can cause paint layers to separate from the wall, resulting in open seams, lifted edges, or wall damage. A properly installed liner provides a strong, uniform surface that resists this pulling force. The wallpaper seams are pulling against the liner paper rather than directly against paint layers or drywall surfaces, greatly reducing the likelihood of seam failure.
Liner paper is available in several varieties. Traditional paper liners are commonly used to create a smooth, absorbent surface. Acid-free liner papers are often selected for specialty applications where long-term stability is important. Synthetic liners are also available and come in various thicknesses to suit different wall conditions and concealment requirements.
Some synthetic liner papers are manufactured in heavier weights specifically to help conceal wall imperfections. These thicker liners can be installed over lightly stuccoed walls, orange peel textures, knockdown finishes, and other uneven surfaces. While no liner paper will completely eliminate heavy texture, certain products can reduce the appearance of texture by 80 to 90 percent, creating a much smoother surface for wallpaper installation. This can often save considerable time and expense on wall preparation compared to extensive skim coating.
There are two primary methods of installing liner paper: vertically and horizontally. Vertical installation is the most common method and is preferred by many professional wallpaper installers. It creates a uniform, absorbent surface similar to the paper facing found on drywall. This stable, fibrous layer helps prevent wallpaper seams from pulling paint away from the wall during drying.
Horizontal lining offers additional benefits when dealing with difficult wall surfaces. Spanning the entire wall continuously helps unify the substrate and create a consistent surface across the room. Many installers believe this method provides the greatest wall stabilization because the liner paper bridges the entire wall without creating vertical seams beneath the finished wallpaper.
Whether installed vertically or horizontally, liner paper seams should always be staggered so they do not align with the seams of the finished wallpaper. This simple technique increases strength, improves durability, and helps ensure a long-lasting, professional installation.
